European Union, EU-Russia Relations

The European Union as a subject of research is still popular in Russia. However the majority of Russian research projects in this area is superficial and mostly descriptive and reflects Brussels’ official point of view on its development and further evolution especially after the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. Moreover low attention is paid to the problems of the nonlinearity of EU political, economic and institutional development, to the distribution of power in the EU and also to the problems of sovereignty of EU member-states and how it influences the development of the EU and is refracted in the processes of European integration.

This research project is called to fulfill some gaps between Russian and European schools and to present a new vision of the logic of EU internal political and economic development and of the future evolution of the place and role of the EU in world economy and world politics. In the first place this will be achieved by virtue of the mythology which analyzes the EU as an intergovernmental and interstate entity with deep level of integration, with focus on the problem of sovereignty and its reflection on internal European process and on distribution of power and struggle in the EU. This will enable to create a clear and objective picture of the European Union as a partner (especially for Russia) in foreign policy and as a player of world economy and world politics in order to make more reasonable recommendations for the further development of EU-Russia relations.

The project is being carried out with the assistance of Higher School of Economics Fundamental Research Program
